The Surge in Executions: A Sign of Regime Panic

When asked about the recent rise in executions across Iran, particularly targeting political prisoners, the British MP expressed profound concern. He described the situation as deeply distressing, interpreting the escalation not as a show of strength, but as a symptom of a deeper crisis within the ruling establishment.

"What it shows is perhaps a sign of panic within the regime," Vickers stated. He emphasized that the spike in capital punishment reflects an ongoing effort to silence any form of internal opposition. According to Vickers, the current reality in Iran leaves no doubt that the fundamental human rights of its citizens are being systematically denied, pointing specifically to the total absence of freedom of religion.


Proscribing the IRGC: The Parliamentary Struggle

The conversation then turned to the long-standing campaign within the United Kingdom to place the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the official list of foreign terrorist organizations. Vickers has been a prominent advocate for this designation and shed light on the challenges faced by lawmakers in London.

He acknowledged that while there is a very powerful collective movement within the British Parliament to outlaw the IRGC, successive UK governments have consistently resisted taking this step. Describing this governmental hesitation as "very depressing," Vickers assured that the legislative fight is far from over. Following his participation in a weekend conference focused on Iran, he pledged that he and his parliamentary colleagues would return to Westminster to renew their pressure on ministers to formally proscribe the organization.


The Road Map to a Democratic Iran

Regarding the political future of Iran, the discussion focused on the transitional road map proposed by the Iranian opposition to establish a democratic system. Vickers explicitly endorsed the opposition's framework, stating that "the 10-point plan that has been put forward is clearly the way forward."

Recognizing the limitations of external political influence, he noted that British MPs must continue to utilize their legislative platform to speak out consistently and attempt to influence international policy in support of this democratic transition.


A Message of Solidarity to the Iranian People

Concluding the interview, Martin Vickers delivered a direct message of hope and encouragement to the people of Iran who are striving for change:

"Don't give up. We are behind you," Vickers declared. He reaffirmed that advocates within the British Parliament will continue to do everything in their power to give voice to the concerns of the Iranian public, while keeping pressure on both the UK government and the wider international community to take the necessary actions required to support the return of a free Iran.
