Beyond War or Appeasement: A Third Way for Iran
For years, the international debate on Iran has been trapped in a false choice: endless conflict or passive appeasement.
Speaking at the “Iran Beyond War, the Power of the People” conference in Rome, former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt challenged world leaders—particularly in Europe—to break this silence and adopt a bold “Third Strategy”: active engagement with the Iranian people and their organized democratic resistance.
Here is how this two-pillar strategy offers a real path toward a free and democratic Iran.
Pillar 1: Total Regime Isolation
While designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization was a crucial step, Verhofstadt argues it is nowhere near enough. Total isolation requires targeting the entire infrastructure that keeps the regime afloat:
Comprehensive Sanctions: Expand sanctions beyond the IRGC to include prison guards, police, financial enablers, religious officials, and regime-linked academics.
Diplomatic Expulsion: Close Iranian embassies and eject regime diplomats who represent a criminal government rather than the Iranian people.
Asset Seizure: Freeze and seize all regime-linked bank accounts, real estate, and wealth abroad.
Pillar 2: Formal Recognition of the Democratic Opposition
Isolating the regime is only half the battle. The international community must actively back the legitimate voice of the Iranian people—led by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and Mrs. Maryam Rajavi.
According to Verhofstadt, true recognition means taking concrete, diplomatic actions:
Constitutional Collaboration: Use Mrs. Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan as the foundation for drafting a future democratic republic’s constitution.
Diplomatic Status: Grant official diplomatic representation and international organization seats (such as at the UN) to the democratic resistance rather than regime officials.
Partnering with the Provisional Government: Work directly with the organized opposition to prepare for a smooth transition of power.
The Bottom Line
The era of European silence must end. By cutting off the regime’s resources and formally empowering the democratic alternative, the international community can finally help pave the way for a free, secular, and democratic Iran.
