The Regime’s Deadly Impasse and the Horizon of a Democratic Iran
Amid regional turbulence and the shadows of conflict, Iran's ruling regime is deploying every tool at its disposal to mask its internal fragility and systemic decay. Yet, behind this aggressive posture lies a profound deception. The widening fractures at the highest levels of power serve as an unmistakable sign that the regime has entered a terminal political impasse.
War-Mongering: A Shield for Dictatorship
In today’s Iran, those advocating for war and prolonged crisis are precisely those whose political survival depends on the continuation of authoritarian rule. This alignment manifests in two distinct forces:
The Ruling Regime: Utilizing external conflict and warmongering to deflect from internal unrest, suppress dissent, and contain popular anger.
The Monarchist Remnants: Relying on media exaggeration and disinformation to orchestrate a return to the deposed autocratic rule of the Shah.
This monarchist faction has openly declared goals that include reinstating SAVAK—the Shah’s notorious secret police responsible for the torture and execution of thousands—alongside the suppression of ethnic nationalities and the imposition of martial law. In practice, their primary political contribution has been diverting focus from the current struggle, ultimately serving as an auxiliary lifeline to the ruling dictatorship.
Rejecting Both Past and Present Tyranny
The Iranian people have paid an extraordinary price for liberation, most notably during the 1988 massacre of political prisoners. Having sacrificed so much to dismantle authoritarian rule, society will neither tolerate the current religious dictatorship nor accept a return to monarchical despotism. The struggle is defined by a clear rejection of both the past and present forms of autocracy.
The NCRI and the Democratic Alternative
In contrast to these autocratic options, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)—a coalition comprising the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) and various democratic groups and personalities founded 45 years ago—presents a viable, democratic alternative.
The NCRI advocates for a transition grounded in the core aspirations of the Iranian populace:
A Democratic Republic: Transitioning away from all forms of dictatoric rule.
Separation of Religion and State: Establishing a secular government that respects freedom of belief.
Free and Fair Elections: Guaranteeing that sovereign power rests entirely with the popular vote.
The political divides in Iran are clearer than ever. On one side stand those who seek to preserve or resurrect dictatorship; on the other stand the Iranian people and democratic resistance forces striving for a free, secular, and democratic republic.
