Standing in Solidarity with Iran: No to War, No to Appeasement

Speaker: Rob Mitchell, Member of the Australian Parliament

Key Themes: Human Rights, Democratic Transition, the 10-Point Plan, and Bilateral Foreign Policy Action

Acknowledgment of Country and Opening Welcomes

We pay our respects to elders past and present, honoring Indigenous Australians’ over 60,000 years of continuous connection to this place—a heritage essential to celebrate as we walk together in reconciliation.

Decades of Regional Instability and Internal Oppression

For decades, the ruling regime in Tehran has acted as a primary destabilizing force both regionally and globally through:

  • Developing ballistic missile and nuclear capabilities.

  • Funding and arming violent regional proxies.

  • Conducting systematic campaigns of internal violence, intimidation, and brutal crackdowns that have cost thousands of lives.

The international community maintains a clear consensus: the regime must respect fundamental human rights and must never be permitted to acquire nuclear weapons. Furthermore, we honor the memory of tens of thousands who lost their lives to political oppression, including the 30,000 political prisoners massacred in 1988—a tragic anniversary marking 38 years this month.

Endorsing Democratic Transition: The 10-Point Plan

The path forward for Iran requires neither military conflict nor diplomatic concessions. War is not the answer, nor is appeasement. The Iranian people deserve a peaceful transition toward a democratic state led by courageous, patriotic Iranians through free and fair elections.

Acknowledging the video message from Maryam Rajavi, we honor her stoic leadership, dignity, and the clarity of her platform. Particular support is extended to her 10-point plan, a comprehensive roadmap for justice, human rights, and democratic governance that commands widespread admiration and endorsement.

Unprecedented Action by the Australian Government

To support the struggle for a free Iran, the Australian government has taken robust, multi-faceted measures:

  • Diplomatic Operations: Closing the embassy and expelling the regime's ambassador.

  • Security & Legal Designations: Formal listing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

  • Targeted Sanctions: Placing over 230 individuals on targeted sanction lists for human rights abuses and regional destabilization.

A Cross-Party Commitment to Universal Freedom

Australia stands shoulder to shoulder with the Iranian community. Across all parliamentary factions, members remain unified in advocating for global peace, swift de-escalation in the Middle East, and the fundamental right to democracy. Living in freedom is a blessing Australians enjoy from birth—a right that belongs equally to the people of Iran and every nation across the globe.
