Javaid Rehman Links 1988 Atrocities to Post-2026 Executions

Professor Javaid Rehman, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran from 2018 to 2024, warned that the critical findings in his final UN report are now materializing in real time. That landmark report documented systematic executions, torture, and enforced disappearances spanning 1979 through 1988, establishing that crimes against humanity and genocide were committed by Iranian authorities.

Dr. Rehman underscored a direct ideological continuum connecting the 1988 massacres to current executions. He noted that the enduring influence of Ayatollah Khomeini’s fatwa and the revived use of broad political charges—such as moharebeh (enmity against God) and baghi (armed rebellion)—demonstrate an ongoing doctrine of repression.

Following the nationwide protests of January 2026, politically motivated death sentences have increasingly targeted PMOI supporters and members of the Resistance Units. “Individuals are being sentenced to death and executed not because of any criminal conduct,” Dr. Rehman stated, “but because of political beliefs and organizational affiliations.”

To address these continuing violations, Dr. Rehman urged sponsors of the upcoming UN General Assembly Third Committee resolution to explicitly endorse an international accountability mechanism, while calling on member states to aggressively expand universal-jurisdiction proceedings against perpetrators.
