No to Shah's Dictatorship, No to the Mullahs: Why Iran's Future Belongs to Democracy

Author: Dr. Phil Glendenning — Australian Supporters of Democracy in Iran

The Iranian people's unrelenting struggle for freedom and democracy has rallied worldwide international solidarity. Today, the global community stands firmly beside a nation determined to take control of its own destiny.

At international conferences around the globe, prominent leaders have repeatedly praised the extraordinary courage of Iranian men and women in their pursuit of liberty. A notable quote from former President of Ireland Mary Robinson—describing Mrs. Maryam Rajavi as the bravest and most courageous woman in the world—serves as a testament to this leadership. The Australian Supporters of Democracy in Iran (established in 2004 to defend human rights, women's rights, and democratic aspirations) is proud to amplify this cause.

A Grim Legacy of Repression and Fear of the People

Modern Iranian history is marked by painful atrocities alongside magnificent perseverance. In the summer of 1988, approximately 30,000 political prisoners—over 90% of whom were members or supporters of the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI)—were executed in a brutal massacre.

Today, the regime's execution machine remains relentlessly active; around 1,500 people face death sentences, young activists like Vahid Bani-Amerian and Pouya Ghobadi have been executed, and political prisoners such as Arghavan Falahi and Zara Tahari remain at grave risk.

"Why does the clerical regime refuse to stop the executions? Because it fears the freedom fighters, and it fears its own people. When a regime is reduced to killing its own people, it is clear evidence that it has lost its capacity to sit at the table of civilized nations."

No Return to Monarchy, No Survival of the Clerical Dictatorship

A core principle of the democracy movement is that the Iranian people will never accept replacing one tyranny with another. Having overthrown the Shah's monarchy and actively resisted the current religious dictatorship, the Iranian people firmly reject any externally imposed "solutions"—especially foreign attempts promoting the Shah's son or restoring a monarchical system.

Core Demands of the Iranian Nation:

Democracy & Rule of Law: Restoration of human dignity, equality, justice, and fundamental freedoms.

Right to Self-Determination: Rejection of both monarchical and clerical dictatorships in favor of popular sovereignty.

Support for the 10-Point Plan: Endorsement of a democratic roadmap for transition to a free, lay republic.

Immediate Halt to Executions: An end to capital punishment and the unconditional release of all political prisoners.

A Message of Global Solidarity: You Are Not Alone

Standing on the right side of history is a moral imperative. The annual gathering of hundreds of parliamentarians, political leaders, and human rights advocates worldwide demonstrates that the struggle of the Iranian people resonates across the globe.

Final Message to the Courageous People of Iran:

"Know that you are not alone. Whilst we may be many thousands of kilometers away physically, we see your struggle, we hear your voices, and we stand with you until the day we meet in a free Tehran, a free Shiraz, a free Isfahan, a free Kurdistan, and ultimately, a free Iran."
