Tehran’s Crackdown: A Sign of Weakness, Not Strength

Image
Bundestag member Carsten Müller has described Iran as currently standing at a critical political turning point. He argued that the regime’s intensified crackdown on political opponents reveals its vulnerability rather than demonstrating strength. Despite attempting to portray its survival through military confrontation as a political victory, Tehran remains unable to resolve its profound domestic crisis. The scale of this broad campaign is evident in the escalating numbers: between September 30 and October 13 alone, the regime executed at least 43 prisoners, including 19 executions carried out on September 30 alone. This wider campaign has increasingly targeted political prisoners, protesters, and individuals accused of supporting the organized opposition. Among recent cases is 23-year-old student Amirhassan Akbari Monfared, whose death sentence over alleged links to the PMOI was upheld by the regime’s Supreme Court. For Müller, the persistence of the PMOI despite decades of persecuti...

The Flames of Resistance Will Not Be Crushed

Since the start of the war last February, the mullahs have executed about dozens of political prisoners, including nine members of the PMOI. They have hanged dozens of protesters from the January uprising. Many more have been sentenced to death and are awaiting execution, while thousands of protesters face deeply unfair trials and potential death sentences. On July 1, the 25-year-old political prisoner Arghavan Fallahi was sentenced to death. Her main charge is supporting the PMOI . The true “crime” of Arghavan, and all those executed or facing death, is that they refuse to see the Iranian people being held captive by a criminal regime. Their crime is that they want an end to the misogynistic dictatorship that oppresses and humiliates Iranian women every single day. If this regime had any stability, it would not resort to these executions. However, t...

Image
Former member of the Bundestag's Human Rights Committee, Martin Patzelt , has raised strong objections to the Friedrich Naumann Foundation’s decision to involve Reza Pahlavi in presenting its 2026 Freedom Prize for the Iranian people. According to Patzelt, more than 80 former ministers, politicians, academics, and cultural figures have signed an open letter criticizing the move. Patzelt rejected arguments framing Pahlavi’s public visibility as sufficient legitimacy, emphasizing that "being well known" does not equate to democratic representation. Describing the decision as politically damaging, Patzelt argued that the Iranian government has long sought to force the public into a binary choice between clerical rule and the restoration of the monarchy. “Whoever gives prestige to the symbol of the former dictatorship in this way gives a gift to today’s dictatorship,” Patzelt stated. He further noted that Reza Pahlavi does not serve as a unifying symbol for the opposition tod...
