Tehran’s Crackdown: A Sign of Weakness, Not Strength

Bundestag member Carsten Müller has described Iran as currently standing at a critical political turning point. He argued that the regime’s intensified crackdown on political opponents reveals its vulnerability rather than demonstrating strength. Despite attempting to portray its survival through military confrontation as a political victory, Tehran remains unable to resolve its profound domestic crisis.

The scale of this broad campaign is evident in the escalating numbers: between September 30 and October 13 alone, the regime executed at least 43 prisoners, including 19 executions carried out on September 30 alone.

This wider campaign has increasingly targeted political prisoners, protesters, and individuals accused of supporting the organized opposition. Among recent cases is 23-year-old student Amirhassan Akbari Monfared, whose death sentence over alleged links to the PMOI was upheld by the regime’s Supreme Court.

For Müller, the persistence of the PMOI despite decades of persecution is particularly significant. He challenged assertions that the organization has little influence inside Iran, arguing that the regime’s determination to suppress it demonstrates the seriousness with which Tehran regards the movement.

Ultimately, the international community must view these executions not as isolated judicial abuses, but within the broader context of the regime’s desperate efforts to preserve its rule.
